It routes water and coolant back and forth between the radiator and the engine, through a series of inlet and outlet hoses. How it does that is a bit more involved, though.

How Does a Water Pump Work?

The water pump is a centrifugal pump that's driven by a serpentine belt connected to the engine crankshaft. The crankshaft's rotation causes the pump's axles to turn, which creates suction that draws fluid from the radiator. The centrifugal forces splash the fluid against the outer wall of the pump, with the water then draining into the engine block. After the fluid passes through the cylinder heads, it returns to the radiator where it can be cooled and rerouted for another cycle through the engine.

How Do You Spot a Failing Water Pump?

Even the highest quality water pumps can eventually go bad, though. Signs of this include:

• Leaking coolant
• Grinding noises coming you’re your engine

• Your "Low Coolant" warning light comes on
• The temperature warning light comes on
