BMW 128i Transmissions

Your BMW 128i features one of two types of transmissions. The first is an automatic, which are most common these days. The other type is a manual transmission, which requires more engagement from the driver throughout the entire trip.

The Difference Between the Two Transmissions

Automatic transmissions are the easiest by far. You simply maneuver your gear shifter from Park to Reverse or Drive. After that, a torque converter connects the engine and transmission and changes the gear when needed by using fluid pressure.

A manual transmission, however, is a different story entirely. First, you press the clutch. As an input shaft separates, you choose the next gear and a linkage connects a locking collar to an output shaft. When you release the clutch, the input shaft reconnects, the output shaft turns, and you're in the correct gear.

How to Spot Transmission Issues

Eventually, even the best transmission parts can suffer too much wear and tear and begin to go bad. Signs of trouble include:

• Slippery or loose clutch
• A burning smell when you let the clutch out
